The Department of Antioquia in Medellin has announced the dates for the world famous Festival of Flowers in August, 2008.
The Festival of Flowers is scheduled to begin on Friday, August 1st and ends Sunday, August 10th.
History
The first Festival of Flowers took place on May 1, 1957 and was organized by Arturo Uribe, a member of the Board of the Office of Development and Tourism.
The festival lasted for 5 days with an exposition of flowers displayed in the Metropolitan Cathedral, which was organized by the Gardening Club of Medellín and monsignor Tulio Botero to celebrate Virgin Mary day.
The first Silleteros Parade also took place with some 40 men from Santa Elena carrying large flower arrangements on their backs as they walked through the streets of Medellin.
The Festival of Flowers is Colombia's most popular festival in Medellin and
is one of the largest horticultural events in the world.
The city of Medellin celebrates the event with many activities dedicated to the most important business sectors in Colombia, the cut-flower business. Colombia exports around 70% of these flowers to the USA each year where they are in high demand for the quality of many of Colombia's fresh flowers.
During the Festival of Flowers there are a wide variety of themed parades throughout the week; the horse parade, the old car parade, the desfile de los silleteros (flower carrier parade) that should not be missed. Plus many other activities in and around the city such as; concerts, recitals, the orchid and flower exhibition at the Jardin Botanico. The fair ends with a Grand Parade on the final day and filled with music and dancing and....flowers. Lot's of them.
If you plan to attend the "desfile de los silleteros" the Grand Parade held in downtown Medellin, you better get there very early to grab a front row spot because you will have lots of company vying for a good view.

The August Tour to Colombia will coincide with "La Feria de Las Flores" but the travel tour to Medellin, Colombia is not limited to the festival.
We will have many events planned througout the trip which will include trips to a Coffee Finca outside of Medellin, as well as trips to the old hisotrical captial of Antioquia in Santa Fe.
As the State of Antioquia releases more information regarding the events available during the 10 trip, we will add more information regarding the tour to Medellin, Colombia in August, 2008.
